Custom Art

Wondering why you still have posters from college on your walls?  Looking for something that is unique to your home?  Check out this great option from DoodleandHoob.  They take a picture of your house and for $75 will make a custom art piece for your home.

And who is to say you can't do this on your own?  Just get out there and try some art that nobody else can duplicate.  I love personal touches like this in a home :)

Great American Furniture

If your looking for something rustic, custom, western, or re-purposed and you live in the Wood River Valley, check out Great American Furniture in Bellevue.  Terry, the owner, makes almost all the furnishing items in the store and often uses reclaimed or found objects from the valley.  I was often turned off by the exterior of the store thinking they sold "chain" goods or something manufactured in China.  But no!  It's made right here in the valley and each piece has a lot of character and history.  Just ask the owner and he will give you a tale of how and why it was made.

Alternative Log Holder

I've been looking for funky alternatives to traditional log holders.  It's hard to find something that doesn't say "I'm a mountain man" on it...I like this recycled metal holder from Bambeco.  Not sure the hubby would be pleased to do something other then the "man" holder though.  Still it's fun to look at!

2010 Sun Valley Sustainability Conference

The conference is returning to our valley and White Canvas Designs couldn't be more excited about being a supporter again!  If you haven't attended in the past this is a wonderful opportunity to tour some of the green homes and businesses in the valley as well as meet professionals involved in the green building movement.  From alternative energy to landscape architecture, and of course environmentally friendly interior design this conference is suitable for anyone to attend.

Two projects that I have worked on will be included in the Sustainability Tour.  The Rocky Mountain Hardware building in Hailey, and the Habitat for Humanity home in Bellevue.

Mabel Sofa

I admit visiting Palm Springs this past weekend gave me a little spring fever.  A friend recently introduced me to Liberty of London and I found this sofa perfect for a spring fling.  How adorable is the fabric in offset dark and light.  It looks so comfortable which is a must for a spring reading spot.
Happy Friday and weekend to all :)

Casters

I am obsessed with old cart wheels lately and using them on furniture feet.  Finding the true vintage ones isn't easy unless you have access to random early 1900's equipment.  However, if your looking like I have been you can go to Restoration Hardware and find some nice examples on some of their refurbished furniture pieces.

Back from the Desert

Aaahhh...what a treat to slip into summer time mid-winter.  Grapefruit, golfing, and a little time in the sunshine can do wonders for the soul.  It was a treat to visit the Palm Springs area and witness the new yet traditional adobe style homes in La Quinta to the traditional 60's architecture in Palm Springs.  It's a good reminder of the importance of line in structures.

Travel Blog

> My first attempt at blogging admist traveling with my iPhone (so
> pardon my grammer...mom). With limited knowledge of how to post
> pictures or links I find myself relying on my immediate
> surroundings. More news stands, food vendors, and salty snacks then
> I care to ever see again.
>
> It's a long weekend and we are headed to Palm Springs. Makes me
> think of Frank Sinatra and the Ratpack generation. With those retro
> slick furnishings and the focus on entertaining in high style it's
> hard not to think of the color orange, martinis, and flokati rugs.
>
> If you haven't seen it yet check out the newest Architectural
> Digest. Jennifer Aniston has a fabulous new place that pays hommage
> to the former kings of style. It's a nice break from the tacky neon
> lights and slot machines we have at the Vegas airport waiting for
> our next flight.

Barcelona Chair History

This 1929 chair is a classic Ludwig Mies van der Rohe design during the Bauhaus/Modernist period in Germany.  The frame was initially designed to be bolted together, but was redesigned in 1950 using stainless steel, which allowed the frame to be formed by a seamless piece of metal, giving it a smoother appearance. Bovine leather replaced the ivory-colored pigskin which was used for the original pieces.  The design was meant for the king and queen of Spain, while the stool was intended to accommodate their attendants.  It was also meant to be affordable to the "common man" however, today's chairs can reach into the $4,000 range explaining why Zach and I have an imitation Barcelona in our home. Regardless of it's final production this design is beautiful, modern, and elegant.
The Barcelona Chair was honored with the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and is currently a registered trademark of Knoll.

Repurposing Plastic Bottles by Anthropologie

"Did you know fifty billion plastic bottles were consumed in the U.S. alone last year-38 billion of which ended up in landfills.  Science tells us that these bottles will not biodegrade until the next millennium."
An artist working with Anthropologie decided to take on the initiative in reusing these plastic bottles in store displays.  She transformed them into flowers and manages to make something beautiful out of the seemingly ugly.  Gosh I love Anthro!

Not Your Grandmother's Wallpaper

Wallpaper has changed tremendously over the past thirty years.  No longer do I think "yuck" when visualizing a room covered in pastel type flowered wallpaper.  There are so many great options out today and one of my favorites has to be "Frames Wallpaper" by Graham and Brown.  Approx 50% of this wallpaper is sourced from recycled material or from FSC-certified (Forestry Stewardship Council) managed forests. AND...you can customize this particular style with pictures of your kids, their art, your art, photos, or what have you!  For $40 a roll I think you have yourself a rad way to cover a room.

Hanger Chandelier's

Chandelier's are one of those things that are really limitless when it comes to design.  For instance check out these chandeliers from industrial designers Alex Witko and Courtney Hunt at Organelle Design.  They have hit upon another great idea — Hangeliers.
