O' Shopping Tree

Tis the season to decorate your Christmas tree. Bet you never thought of decorating your tree with shopping carts. Heck, who needs the tree? Why not just make the entire thing out of shopping carts.

Believe it or not, 86 metal shopping carts were balanced atop one another to form this 33-foot-tall holiday tree which graced the Frank Gehry-designed Edgemar mall in Santa Monica, California last year. Designed by artist Anthony Schmitt, this beacon of holiday spirit attracted a lot of attention with its glittering good looks and rather unconventional material.

“The shopping cart tree symbolizes both generosity and abundance, as well as acknowledging those less fortunate where their whole world may be housed in a cart. We see shopping carts every day and take them for granted. Individually the beauty of an everyday object may become invisible, but in quantity you can’t miss it,” says Anthony Schmitt of his design.

This actually isn’t the first time that the shopping cart tree has gone up – Schmitt conceived the idea 14 years ago at the request of Abby Sher, the former owner and developer of Edgemar, and the Colwell and Belden families have continued the annual tradition of commissioning the tree since buying Edgemar in 2007.
The 2010 tree is made out of mostly full size carts with some smaller versions at the top to create a forced perspective of height. The carts are supported by an internal structure that remains nearly invisible, allowing the carts to seem like they were merely stacked atop one another and left in that perilous formation.

Sustainable interior designer and expectant mother Sarah Latham entices local moms to share their secrets for creative and healthy children’s rooms.
Quite soon after discovering I was pregnant with my first child, I made a second startling discovery: Babies need stuff. A lot of stuff. Not only that, but there’s a daunting multitude of options, and with all the health concerns and product warnings facing a first-time mother, the fear of getting the wrong item is magnified. So I set out to determine which products would be the healthiest for my baby and the environment.
According to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Green Home Guide, the most important step is to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals. Babies’ immune, hormonal and nervous systems are still developing, meaning environmental pollutants affect them more than they do adults. Creating a green nursery is incredibly important to a child’s health since newborns spend an average of 16 to 17 hours a day there.
I wanted to create a nursery where I wouldn’t have to worry about chemicals, toxins or other hazardous materials. I wanted to make my child’s room safe and green.
For answers and advice, I turned to the community of Wood River Valley mothers to glean from their experiences just how best to envelop my child in a healthy and sustainable environment.
Anne Mulick designed the rooms of her daughters, Maeve, 1, and Grace, 7, with the environment in mind. “It gives us peace of mind that we are doing the right thing,” she said.
The key ingredient for any green nursery is the paint. Benjamin Moore Aura paints are a low-VOC, low-odor, acrylic paint that releases no or minimal volatile organic compounds, though they’re more expensive than standard paint (a gallon of regular Benjamin Moore starts at $34, its Aura paint starts at $58). “The paint seemed like a logical choice,” Mulick said. “Why wouldn’t we do that for our girls?”
An area rug made of 100 percent wool in Maeve’s room also contributes to better air quality. Wool and other raw, natural materials don’t require the use of VOCs or other chemicals that are known carcinogens (such as benzene and formaldehyde), substances commonly found in synthetic floor coverings. They also contribute to the use of rapidly renewable, local and environmentally friendly practices in growing.

This is why it is also important to choose natural, and if possible, organic materials for the child’s bed. The Green Home Guide recommends real wood, natural finishes and untreated pure cotton and wool (preferably organic) bedding.

However, the crib is one area where going green can be substantially more expensive. For safety reasons, reusing cribs is not recommended and, as Becky Kinman of Hailey discovered when she researched cribs for her son, Holden, the environmentally responsible route costs more in this instance. Kinman selected a crib from Nurseryworks, which specializes in handcrafted contemporary furnishings made with environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes. The crib, which retails for $800, is made with paulownia wood (a fast-growing, richly grained, lightweight, fire- and decay-resistant hardwood species), low-VOC finishes and glues and formaldehyde-free dyes. Kinman also opted for an organic mattress. An alternative option is choosing an organic mattress cover, which helps limit off-gassing from a regular mattress (as does airing it out for as long as possible prior to use). For Kinman, the extra expense of a truly “green” crib was worth the investment. “With such a small space (the nursery is a trapezoid-shaped 9 feet by 11 feet), I wanted to make sure nothing was toxic for Holden or us,” she said.
Kinman offset the expense of the crib by using repurposed items for the rest of the room’s furniture. “They were items we had used in other parts of our house and incorporated into his room instead of purchasing new,” Kinman said. “So it almost felt like a wash.” Reusing existing furnishings cuts the demand for raw, virgin materials and eliminates landfill waste. An added bonus is that the items often have special meaning for the family. Old apple crates, salvaged from Holden’s grandparents’ farmhouse, were transformed into bookshelves, and a dresser from Kinman’s childhood doubled as a changing table. “We tried to make it a fun blend of whimsical art and color, along with some modern touches,” she said.
Mulick also opted to use hand-me-down, recycled and repurposed items to offset the cost of the pricier green items. An old chair passed down from Mulick’s parents was easily adjusted to the nursery courtesy of a new slipcover. “I like the nostalgia of reusing pieces from a different time into a different space,” Mulick said. Artwork from her childhood was framed and reused as decorative pieces in the girls’ rooms.
Lisa and Nate Scales came up with a practical solution for one of the biggest contributors to indoor air pollution in children’s rooms: plastic toys. They made their own.
After searching for a step stool for their two daughters, Ripley, 4, and Daisy, 1, the Hailey couple was disappointed in their choices. “They were expensive, poor quality and not the size we were looking for,” said Lisa. Fortunately, Nate, a carpenter, set about making the perfect one from wood, decorating it with no-VOC paint.
“We had so much fun with that project, so we started looking for the next toy to build and came up with the toy kitchen,” Lisa said. “It was really a great learning experience for Ripley to watch the transformation of the pieces of wood she was sanding turn into her kitchen.”

Using mainly leftover wood and salvaged scraps of pine from their wood pile, the Scales have so far created a step stool, a kitchen set (complete with over-easy eggs, noodles, tomatoes and lettuce made out of felt), a baby carrier, trees, animals, blocks and a repurposed play house.
The handmade approach is not only environmentally friendly (an assembly-line product uses more energy), but it provides the family with a deeper connection to the products they consume. “They mean something to all of us, because we all have contributed to the final product rather than some plastic, store-bought toy that has no significance,” she said.

If making your own is not an option, opt for cloth and wooden toys, available at local shops such as The Toy Store. Where plastic is unavoidable, choose PVC-free (PVC is usually identified by the number 3 in the recycling symbol) and when in doubt, smell it. Toxic softeners give plastics that strong new smell.

Creating an environmentally clean room for a child gives parents the assurance that their children are at least sleeping in a safe environment. The next step, ensuring that the rest of their world is safe, healthy and sustainable, may not be quite so easy.

Sarah's Sustainable Selections when designing a nursery for my first child, I wanted the room to be environmentally friendly, inexpensive and gender-neutral, as well as to have simple, fun shapes and colors.
MATERIALS I focused on finding cotton or organic products as much as possible. Washable was important to make sure I can continually clean the items.

PAINT I selected green and white Benjamin Moore Natura no-VOC wall paint (starting at $58 a gallon). I plan on painting a tree silhouette with two shades of green leaves and a brown trunk. If we have a girl, I’ll add pink accents. It’s important to finish painting at least a month before baby arrives to allow any off-gasses time to dissipate. If time doesn’t permit this, curing the room with a space heater will also do the trick.
FLOORING A striped, green, 100-percent-cotton woven rug, made by New York-based Dash & Albert, will be the centerpiece of the floor over our existing wool carpet. These rugs are lightweight, reversible, washable and affordable ($28-$385). When choosing flooring, the best option is mostly bare, embellished with a rug or two with nonslip pads, as this is easy to clean. But don’t rip up old carpet, just clean it well.
FURNITURE For the crib, I wanted as natural a sleeping environment as possible, so I decided on a crib from Dwell Studio, an environmentally responsible company based in New York City. The Century Crib ($980) is made in Canada out of solid European beech wood and painted with nontoxic paints. I selected an Ikea dresser made from renewable material (wood fibers), which will easily be separated for recycling after its lifetime. My husband, Zach, and his father, Nick, have built a changing table out of repurposed wood from our garage to place on top. For those nighttime feedings, I found a vintage rocking chair at a garage sale. I plan to make a cushion for it from environmentally friendly fabric company Mod Green Pod’s Grand Jubilee Chocolate pattern. The fabric is 100 percent organic cotton and retails at $40 a yard.

BEDDING For the bedding, I also went with Dwell Studio, known for its colorful and whimsical patterns. I opted for its Owl Sky crib set ($360), which is 100 percent cotton and uses low-impact fiber-reactive dyes and eco-friendly pigments. The owl theme is gender-neutral and gives the room a sweet, playful sensibility.

upkeep After all this hard work and research, I’ll be sure to keep the nursery safe by using natural and nontoxic cleaning products and pest controls.

Who says you can’t take it with you? “Portable Home,” a wearable-shelter concept by three Middlesex University students in London, is part wacky ensemble, part escape strategy. Franziska Lusser, Hanna Nielsen, and Luca Romanyi, who hail from Germany, Sweden, and Hungary, respectively, designed Portable Home as a response to their nomadic existence. “As all of us are foreigners, we feel like we are always on the go,” Romanyi tells Ecouterre. “We have access to only a small part of our belongings. A ‘portable home’ can be seen as substitute for the feeling of being home.”

In addition to a skirt that turns into a tent (complete with a window view), the outfit also includes a bag that unfolds into a shelf for displaying books and other mementos. At its crux, Portable Home describes the conflict between the desire to explore and our longing for the familiar.

“We get the chance to travel all around the world, study in different countries, learn about other cultures, and make new friends with various backgrounds, which is great,” Romanyi explains. “But on the other hand, during our journey, we always leave precious people and places behind.”

An itinerant way of life—one that is as familiar to refugees as it is to international students—translates to temporary accommodations and a limited number of possessions. “This kind of lifestyle is liberating and frustrating at the same time, and Portable Home represents both sides of it,” she adds.

Reclaimed Vintage Lighting

I have an appreciation for these fixtures as I tried to take the "easy" route and order something similar from Pottery Barn. After it arrived to our house I realized that the hanging dimensions were far from what we needed on our sloped ceiling. Like everything else in our house I knew we would need to customize to get it right.

New Cork Floor

We did this in March but thought it was a worthy post for WCD.

After months of planning, Zach sacrificed most of this past weekend to install our new laundry room cork flooring. He and I tackled the removal of our existing linoleum flooring on Saturday afternoon and then a good friend, Ian, came in on Sunday and installed the new cork with Zach. Thank goodness for Ian's help! We couldn't have done it without him :)

Ceramic Infused Cork plank flooring...aahhh!

We purchased the cork planks through Sustainable Flooring in Boulder, Colorado. The warmth and acoustic value of our new laundry room flooring was immediately apparent. Read below for more specific information on the cork itself.

Sustainability Benefit:

Cork from Portugal is sustainable for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is rapidly renewable, being that the bark of the tree is peeled from the trunk, and then tree is left to regenerate. This provides an almost limitless supply of cork bark, assuming that once the tree is beyond its’ useful life, replacements are planted (which they are). This heavily protected species also carries with it tremendous mechanical and functional properties, most of which are related to the fact that the cork bark is made almost entirely of cellular pockets of air (200 million cells per cubic inch). These cells of trapped air inhibit the passage of sound (making it one of the best acoustic insulators known), and are known as a thermal insulator, separately an often cold floor from the warmth of your foot. In addition, cork is anti-microbial, has tremendous “bounce-back” properties and forgiveness, and offers one of the greatest slip resistances of any natural material. Despite common wine industry myths, cork availability increases every year (despite minor ups and downs related to weather), and is one of the true really sustainable raw materials in its unaltered state.

New Tile Trends at Coverings Show

I didn't make this years show but thought I would share another's experience.
From the Fresh Home Blog:

Last week, I found myself in Vegas. That’s right, Sin City. And while I spent one fine evening losing my money at the roulette table (wait, I played until 3AM, so that should read “one fine morning”), I was actually invited there to take in the Coverings 2011 show. Billed as the ultimate stone and tile experience—1000+ exhibitors from 50+ countries—I can assure you it delivered. Now I understand why people go gaga over this stuff! Here are five trends or innovations that I found fascinating. (More to come later, I promise.)
1) Amazing ink jet technology that produces high-definition porcelain and ceramic tile meant to mimic the look of natural stone or well-worn wood. Companies like Florida Tile have elevated this to an art form. And the glazing technology is amazing, too! With it, they can, quite convincingly, achieve the sophisticated look of polished marble.

2) The resurgence of glass. Now made in almost any thickness, hue, size or shape imaginable, there’s a new standard in glass. It’s stronger and can be used for countertops, partition panels and even benches, much like the one I snapped at the Interstyle Ceramic and Glass booth. And don’t you just love their ripple glass? It’s available in 40+ colors, and you’d swear water flows over its surface. Stunning.

3) Twisted tile. And bent…and stretched…and weaved together. Tile is being manipulated any which way, and the results are drool worthy. Cover an entire wall or add a simple strip to up the visual ante. Love the Evolution collection from Apavisa with all its texture and dark, sexy color.

4) Media mash-ups are hot. Glass + metal + mirror + ceramic = hello, gorgeous. And, believe it or not, so is graffiti! Artfully done via ink jet technology, it’s the epitome of urban chic.

5) Thin is in. We saw it everywhere! 3.5mm-thick porcelain tiles in large, impressive formats. Use them on walls, on floors, on counters. Easy to handle and cut (so perfect for curvy areas), installation is a breeze. And because it’s low profile, it can go right over an existing floor. Plus, it’s considered eco-friendly because thin tiles are made with less material than traditional tiles and are lighter to transport.

A Room for Our Baby

This is baby month! I am due and will be in and out of the blog world while our baby and I adjust to this one. Thought I would post a little on how baby and design have collided for now.

The process of designing our baby's nursery has helped me in two ways: to stay focused throughout the pregnancy ups and downs, and to have a place to direct my excitement for the baby's arrival while we wait. Even though we don't know if we are having a boy or girl, I didn't let that stop me from creating a room for our baby. Nor did I let environmental concerns stop me. I'm happy to say that on a small budget I was able to keep everything in our baby's little room sustainable, re-used, recycled or chemical free. After all, this is where our baby will be spending almost all of their time growing up.

I love blue's and green's and knowing the trend for baby girls is pink and blue for boys, I tried to create a room that could incorporate pink later on if needed (since it's always ok for a girl to be in blue but have yet to see infant boys in pink). I picked bold bright colors that I thought a boy or girl could love. Throwing pink into this room with drapery and pillows should be easy if we do have a girl for an accent color down the road.

We only have two bedrooms in our house so the baby's room has to double as our guest room when we have visitors. The sofa is a pull-out bed from Ikea that my mom will break in when she's visiting after the baby is born.

The crib and bedding are from Dwell Studio and available through my company, White Canvas Designs. The bedding is 100% cotton and soft for baby. The convertible crib is made of beech wood and finished in non-toxic paint. We have an organic mattress that was given to us by my mom to complete the chemical free sleep zone.

Zach and I gathered vintage ski posters while traveling through Switzerland and France a few years ago which I re-framed for artwork. I plan to add pictures of the baby as well after the arrival.

The area rug is from Dash & Albert and 100% cotton for easy washing. All the wall, trim, and closet paint is from Benjamin Moore's "Natura" line, VOC and odor free. For extra precaution while painting I did wear a mask but was happy I wouldn't have to worry about chemical off gassing when baby is sleeping in the room.

The knitted mobile was a gift from girlfriends at my baby shower made by a company called Blabla. The teddy bear was hand knitted by our aunt, Jane, and is absolutely adorable!

I copied a simple pattern of a tree and painted it on the wall after I discovered how expensive wall decals can be.

Instead of a glider (which our little room doesn't have space for) I found a traditional little rocking chair at a garage sale un-upholstered. I used some fabric scraps (100% organic cotton) I had left over from a company called, Mod Green Pod, to upholster a new cushion.

Overall, I'm really happy with how things turned out and plan to incorporate more sentimental items when baby arrives. We have less then a month until we meet the little person that will be living in this room and we couldn't be more excited :)

Berkeley, California, has long been home to forward-thinking, ecologically minded activists, and with Leger Wanaselja Architecture leading the way, even the buildings are catching up.

If you haven’t seen a Toyota Prius on the road, chances are you haven’t been on a road lately. The heralded gas-electric hybrid sedan, with its semifuturistic countenance, leads the world in hybrid sales. Toyota has already sold over 50,000 Priuses in the first half of 2005, outpacing the rival Honda Civic Hybrid by 40,000. If you haven’t noticed many Civic Hybrids out there, it’s not just due to disappointing sales figures, but rather because the Civic looks identical to its gas-guzzling older sibling. If there’s a lesson to be learned, it’s this: If you’re going to go green, it pays to be conspicuous.

But is the same true for architecture? “I think it’s actually the opposite,” contends Katy Hollbacher, program manager of the nonprofit organization Build It Green. “Green building is currently very similar to conventional building as far as aesthetics go.” However, in Berkeley, California, at the busy intersection of Dwight Way and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, sits a notable exception. With a fence made from street signs, awnings crafted from hatchback windows, traffic-sign siding, and a gate fashioned out of Volvo station wagon doors, the Dwight Way, a mixed-use urban-infill project designed, built, and developed by Leger Wanaselja Architecture, is nothing if not conspicuous.

“The response was overwhelming,” says architect Cate Leger, recalling the open houses held for prospective buyers of the condominium units in 2004. “It was a mob scene,” adds her husband and fellow architect Karl Wanaselja. “There was a line around the block.” Although the Dwight Way, with its unusual use of unusual materials, may not be the norm when it comes to sustainable building, the visibility of certain green elements made for lasting impressions and quick sales. Wanaselja reports, “The woman who bought the unit in front told us she changed her route to work so she could drive by every day to check up on the progress.” While green building has pull, especially in left-leaning eco-conscious Berkeley, the resounding success of overtly green Dwight Way (and the Toyota Prius, for that matter) suggests that perhaps the first step to turning around public opinion is to turn heads.

The project, which the architects conceived in two phases (a renovation, followed by new construction), began in 2001 when Leger and Wanaselja purchased a run-down building that was originally a corner store with apartments above. “It was this warren of rooms, where every possible space, even the closets, had been turned into bedrooms,” says Leger, touring one of the now sun-lit and airy 820-square-foot condominiums. “We got mail for 23 different residents the month after we bought it,” adds Wanaselja incredulously.

As soon as the building permits arrived, the pair, who also served as the project contractors, first divided the building into four units, keeping as much of the original structure in place as possible. Although the Dwight Way wears its sustainability on its eaves, throughout the renovation every aspect was considered for maximum eco-sensitivity. Windows were punched into the southern elevation, allowing for greater passive heating. The building was insulated with blown cellulose, which consists of shredded newspapers and phone books. Old-growth Douglas fir and redwood were salvaged during demolition and reused as windowsills, walls, floor patches, and custom doors. Embossed wainscoting, laying dormant under a century’s worth of plaster and bad paint jobs, was restored to offer a historical decorative touch. Terrazzo kitchen counters consisting of recycled glass in a concrete matrix were commissioned from Berkeley-based Counter Production. Low-flow dual-flush toilets and energy-saving Scandinavian kitchen appliances were installed to reduce utility demands.

While these features of the Dwight Way read like a green building checklist, Leger and Wanaselja cross into more experimental territory with their use of recycled car parts and street signs. Being the designers, contractors, and developers offered the couple a unique opportunity to explore their unique ideas. “It’s hard to get a client who says, ‘Do me a place with car parts and street signs,’ but we can do it for ourselves and people can respond to it,” Wanaselja explains. In the estimation of Build It Green’s Hollbacher, it’s a positive move that keeps items out of the landfill and saves resources that would otherwise be used on virgin materials.

In a phase-one condominium, the glass rear hatches of Mazda RX-7s are used as protective railings along the stairs. Wanaselja, obviously no stranger to the salvage yard, goes into further detail. “I look for ones that still have some hardware so it makes it possible to attach to a building—the glass is tempered, so if you try and drill a hole it will break.” “But it meets code!” Leger adds with a laugh. In the bathroom, a closer look reveals that what seem to be ordinary glass shelves are in fact windows from Volkswagen Karmann Ghias. “Those are hard to find,” Wanaselja points out. Furthering the automotive dis-course, Porsche 924 hatches are used as awnings above many of the exterior entrances, and a gate to the parking lot is crafted from hovering Volvo station wagon doors.

Other salvaged materials come in the form of street signs, bought by the pound at the local dump. On the building’s south elevation these are reversed and brushed, creating aluminum scales that reflect brightly in the afternoon sun. Elsewhere the signs are bent into outdoor lights, stair railings, and eaves and fabricated into fences (in one case, reversed one-way signs create a peculiar homage to the picket fence).

The original lot purchased as part of phase one was large enough to accommodate another structure, so construction began on the ground-up phase two in 2003. For Leger and Wanaselja, building green doesn’t just mean using the right materials, it extends into living with smaller, more manageable spaces—a democratizing of resources. Sitting parallel to the renovated corner building, with a narrow garden and pathway between, phase two borrows from and evolves the design vocabulary developed during phase one.

It’s not unexpected, then, that the architects’ ecological approach extends to every aspect of the building. The concrete slabs employed 50 percent fly ash, a waste product of coal burning. The natural plaster walls were left unpainted and removed the need for caulk and trim. A system of dry wells was dug to keep graywater runoff onsite. Car parts and street signs make appearances throughout—as railings, shelves, awnings, siding, lighting, and fences.

As developers, and green developers at that, the couple took a risk with the Dwight Way. “We were cantilevered way out there,” Wanaselja jokes as only architects can. “The number crunching was scary.” The response, however, has been overwhelmingly positive—a new renovation and infill project is already in the works. “It’s a way of expressing our values,” intones Leger, “and an outlet for our creative channels.”

For anyone who knows Berkeley, a place long associated with vociferous manifestations of counterculture, the Dwight Way, with its overtly green approach, seems a perfect architectural summation of the city’s values. Like so much in this island of blue (the political blue, that is) it’s hard not to wonder how the Dwight Way would be regarded were it built elsewhere: as a mere roadside curiosity, or as impetus for greater, more positive change in the way the public perceives housing? Leger and Wanaselja are positive it’s the latter. We’ll reserve judg-ment until Detroit unveils its first fuel-cell pickup truck.

Conflict Kitchen Rises Again

If you're ever in Pittsburgh, you must swing by Conflict Kitchen for lunch it is an artist-run take-out window in Pittsburgh, selling street food solely from countries the United States is in conflict with, in three-month rotations. Artist and professor Jon Rubin, who founded the project last year, recently wrote me to say they'd shuttered the Kitchen's first iteration—Kudideh Kitchen, selling Iranian sandwiches—and reopened as Bolani Pazi, an Afghan take-out restaurant that serves a savory homemade afghan turnover filled with either pumpkin, spinach, lentils, or potatoes and leeks.

Dwell asked Rubin to tell them a bit about Conflict Kitchen's latest incarnation. "We chose Afghanistan for our current iteration as it neighbors Iran and is obviously the site of direct military engagement with elements within the country," he wrote in an email.

Bolani is an Afghan turnover filled with either pumpkin, spinach, lentils, or potatoes and leeks. It's packaged in a custom-designed wrapper that includes interviews with Afghans both in Afghanistan and the United States on subjects ranging from Afghan food and culture to the current geopolitical turmoil.

"Also we felt that our customer base had an introduction to the culture and sociopolitcal dynamics of Iran and we wanted to be able to contrast this information by looking at one of their direct neighbors. Obviously there are many historical and contemporary links between the countries, but the stories of daily life and the nature of the U.S. involvement are very different in each country."

The price is right.

"The response has been great, very similar to the Iranian version. Local Afghans here in the city have been very supportive and we are collaborating with several of them when we bring in school groups. We recently had a live Skype event with 10 Afghan filmmakers. We each prepared Bolani, theirs fried, ours grilled, and watched and discussed some of the documentry films that they had produced about daily life in the Kabul an the provinces."

Part of the goal of the take-out window is to get people talking about political and social issues.

What's next for Conflict Kitchen? "We plan on focusing on North Korea next, then most likely Venezuela."

Crystal Treehouse: A Rustic Loft Perched Above an Icy Colorado River

We typically think of treehouses as tree-friendly structures, so the fact that many of them are constructed out of wood that was obtained by bulldozing entire forests doesn’t make much sense. That’s why we’re especially fond of the Crystal Treehouse, which artist David Rasmussen built using blown-down logs and local materials. Located in Carbondale, Colorado, the rustic perch has a snuggly loft with a big picture window that overlooks the icy waters of the Crystal River below.

The framing materials of house are all made up of either reclaimed or blown-down timbers, which we think makes a lot more sense than going to your local big-box construction store to purchase plywood, when you have materials right in the area that are free for the taking. And while much of the timber used was already felled, we should make it clear that a few trees were sawn for the treehouse, but they were all local specimens. Since the trees on the property (cottonwoods) were not strong enough to build on, Rasmussen built log columns to be the main supports. The pine foundation system was chosen for its minimal impact to root systems of the surrounding trees.
The inside of the treehouse is surprisingly roomy with something that is very unusual in the arboreal home world – high ceilings! So high, in fact, that the house has its own loft which can be accessed by a very cool spiral ladder. We also love the many windows – some circular, some square and some oval – that fill the loft with light. Rasmussen also used his skills as a furniture designer to deck out the room with a desk, stools, and custom light fixtures. And when he told us that this place has a stove too, we wondered why anyone would ever leave!

First of all, let me congratulate you on taking on these considerations early.

Passive heating and cooling

So many people start thinking about energy savings after they have started building, and the best way to save energy is to situate your home to take advantage of the natural warmth of the sun and cooling of the breeze.
Ideally, we can completely passively heat and cool our houses and reduce the electrical load using the principles of passive design through heat transfer, superinsulation, ventilation and moisture control, daylighting, and energy efficient lighting and appliances.

Each site and climate must be studied carefully to address the specific characteristics of heating degree days, cooling days, humidity, and exposure to sun and breeze and the hindrances your particular site may have in the way of trees, mountains and other obstructions.
By planning your house paying attention to these principles, you can reduce the need for whatever heating and electrical package you decide on, save on your bills, and help the environment in the process.

Good design vs. bells and whistles

Because these are design issues, they require experts in their area, so you are spending money upfront on professionals instead of spending money on the latest bells and whistles.
Of course, you may spend money on those too, but even if you don’t, you may end up with a much better performing house than if you only spent money on the bells and whistles.
Here’s the thing: solar panels may help you generate electricity, but it does no good if your load is a lot greater than the panels can handle.

Buying an excess of solar panels to meet your excessive load may make any energy savings unlikely when the cost of the panels are considered.
Likewise, the very best heating system won’t save you much if your house is poorly oriented and insulated.

Changing light bulbs is mundane

I have a client who bought solar panels for his house and complained to the manufacturer about not getting much lower energy bills. When I suggested he change all his light bulbs to LED and fluorescent, suddenly he was raving about his solar panels.
Here’s why: solar panels cost him so much they were much more important to rave about, because the light bulb changing was soooo mundane!
I’m not knocking solar panels here; I have them and think they make a big difference, but only if you do the design that supports the elements you install.

Steps to a net zero house

That being said, here are some things to help you get started on your way to an excellent net-zero house:

Find a green architect who is an advocate of passive home design.
Have a mechanical engineer who is also able to model home performance.
If you are a total “do it yourself” person and don’t really want to hire anyone, study information by organizations such as the American Institute of Architects, Passive House Institute, Net Zero Energy Certified, Geothermal Energy Association, Solar Electric Power Association, and of course right here at Green Home Guide there is a lot of data to help you.
Another great resource is often your local utility company, who may have solar calculators online and specific energy saving ideas for your area.
(In your case, since your home is new, you will have to use the data from an electric bill similar to the home you are building to use the calculator.)

Finally, work with experienced professionals

Finally, to answer your question, solar panels and geothermal are both completely appropriate in residential homes and are in fact done all the time.
The question of whether they are common in your area is another thing.

You want to do things where you have a pool of experienced green professionals to choose from to do your work.
Learning on the job isn’t always good for the homeowner.

Bik Van der Pol Unveils Butterfly Sanctuary

Inspired by Mies van der Rohe

Submitted for the latest design competition produced by Enel Contemporanea for the MACRO museum in Rome, winners Bik Van der Pol created an architectural marvel named after an MC Escher quote, “Are you really sure that a floor can’t also be a ceiling?” The spectacular structure is both a homage to the original Farnsworth House designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1951, but in this version of the architecture great, you can find a new home for hundreds of butterflies.

In the 50′s the Farnsworth House was considered the epitome of modern domesticity, connecting man to nature with its floor to ceiling glass walls. But the intention the Bik Van der Pol – which is a Dutch collective of Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol – was to call attention to environmental change with their design. The mini-Farnsworth, which instead of being filled with Mid- Century Modern furniture, is a lush butterfly habitat and green house – much like butterfly conservatories which have been popping up in science museums. Visitors are welcome to enter the biosphere, which inaugurates the new wing of the MACRO museum.
“Are you really sure that a floor can’t also be a ceiling?” brings nature into the context of a museum, putting it in the same realm as works of art. Butterflies are known to be extremely sensitive to environmental change, and their decline is thought of as an early indicator of environmental degradation. Aside from this new fine art context, Bik Van der Pol illustrates the literal with this piece, by requiring man to enter a sanctuary of the living environmental oracle.

Parcels of Any Shape

Excessive packaging is a major pet peeve, so we were really inspired by this flat cardboard sheet that is capable of conforming to the shape of any object, saving a bundle on wasteful filler. Designed by Patrick Sung, the packaging design concept features triangulated perforations that allow it to bend around odd forms. This could also save on fuel for shipping, since all of that wasted box filler is eliminated.

We could see how the concept would not be the most practical for all applications, but it could be really great for mailing a surprise gift to a friend! Soft items like clothing or shoes, or even products that are rigid, like a funky reusable water bottle, could be perfect for this packaging. Not to mention that the perforated lines give the package an interesting graphic pattern style. There is something to be said about the efficiency of boxes that stack, which is why it is great that the sheet can also be folded into standard 6-sided boxes.
Sung has branded his concept the UPACKS (Universal Packaging System). Although it is not related to the shipping carrier United Parcel Service, the naming likeness could attract some attention for this waste reducing, “inside the box” packaging concept.

18th Century Church to Private Home

Adaptive reuse projects generally call to mind industrial warehouses and factories turned into trendy studios, or shabby-chic restaurants and bars, but the transformation of the St. Nicholas Church in Kyloe, Northumberland, England has taken this concept of renewal and grounded it much closer to home. The church was purchased not too long ago by Sally Onions and Ian Bottomley, who went the unconventional route when scouting for their newest digs. Far from a Norman Foster style box, or even a classic and quaint Victorian house, the duo instead opted to transform an 18th century basilica into the sanctuary they now call “home.”

The church was originally built in 1792, so the couple wanted to maintain as much of the building’s classic architecture as possible. Rather than undertaking a full-on renovation — which actually would have been cheaper — they opted to restore the key elements of the church, such as the vaulted ceilings and original stained glass windows.
While sofas and beds have replaced pews, the integrity of the architecture remains – you can even find the old cemetery within the churchyard. But don’t think the two are reading by candlelight once the sun sets — the former house of worship has evolved to accommodate contemporary living with modern appliances, fixtures, electricity, and other creature comforts.

Time and time again, studies (such as this piece published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2004) have shown that exposure to natural light affects your vitamin D and immune system, serotonin and melatonin levels, as well as your circadian rhythms, sleep cycle and hormones. In fact, scientists at the UNC School of Medicine recently published a study in which they pinpointed the key connection between light signals and circadian rhythms. The study is anticipated to give insight on how light influences molecular signals in our bodies to affect a broad array of biological processes ranging from the sleep-wake cycle to cancer growth and development. In addition to the aforementioned studies, the lack of proper lighting can lead to issues such as depression (S.A.D.), immune problems, and your susceptibility to life-threatening diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis and cancer are exacerbated - particularly as related to Vitamin D absorption. Researchers from the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego have found that 600,000 cases of breast and colorectal cancers could be prevented each year worldwide, if vitamin D3 levels were increased. Only within the last couple years have we seen the building industry begin to embrace green lighting that's not only cost and energy-efficient, but also concerned with issues related to human health. However, with heightened awareness, today's consumers are increasingly able to tailor various lighting options to meet their individual needs.

Change Your Bulbs

Despite all the support of many green enthusiasts, the road to the CFL switch has been a rough one. While compact fluorescent bulbs are considerably more energy-efficient than incandescents (they save at least $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb), many individuals continue to dislike the quality of light given off by these bulbs. Add to that the fact that most compact fluorescents have the toxic chemical mercury in them, and you can see why many people are resistant to switching their bulbs. Luckily, in just the last year, the field of energy-efficient lighting has produced a whole new breed of super energy-efficient LED bulbs that have no mercury and better mimic the quality of light we are accustomed to with incandescents. LEDs are gaining speed in the world of interior lighting, with new iterations consistently outperforming the ones that preceded them. Just this year alone, we've seen the release of square LED alternatives to the round bulb, companies switching off incandescent bulb production in favor of LEDs, and most recently the release of LED replacements for the common bulb in local stores. Unlike CFLs, LEDs can be filtered without a dramatic loss in output, meaning that achieving ambient lighting isn't an issue. For example, Philip's A19 AmbientLED delivers the same illumination as a 60 watt white light incandescent, at a mere 12.5 watts -- and like incandescents, they can also be dimmed and fit into just about any lighting fixture. The new LED bulb also boasts a life of 25,000 hours. And if we're talking cash, a single bulb can shave hundreds of dollars off your electricity bill. The reality is, if every state in the US were to switch to these LEDs we would save 32.6 terawatt-hours of electricity each year — enough energy to power 17 million homes. LEDs are very much the future of lighting.

Minimizing Waste on the Jobsite

A question on the USGBC's Green Home Guide: How can my builder minimize waste on my remodel?

You’d be surprised what a high percentage of building and remodeling waste can be recycled. With a little planning, and by working with your contractor before the start of the job, you can dramatically reduce the amount of waste that is created by construction.
Recycling on the jobsite has several benefits:

Reduced waste, which is better for the environment, and may be eligible for points in green building programs;
Potential cost savings from reducing disposal costs and from eliminating the need to buy some new materials; proceeds from recycling of valuable materials;
A cleaner, neater jobsite.

There are a couple of approaches you can take.

A back-of-the-envelope discussion with your contractor regarding what can be reused, and what areas around your property can be used to store materials during the job.
A fully developed construction waste management plan (which may even be required in some municipalities).

Here’s a general timeline.

From the start

Perhaps the most important step is careful measuring and ordering of materials. If you don’t order extra, you won’t have extra to dispose of at the end of the job.
This means working with your contractor to get precise measurements, being clear about your project, and trying to avoid change orders. Modeling or visualization tools (some of which, such as Google’s Sketchup, are available free) can be a big help in this area.

Provide space for recycling

For a re-roofing job, for example, your contractor may need space to locate a second bin, truck, or tarp in order to separate recyclable shingle waste from other jobsite waste such as flashing or wood.
Providing a space to make separating materials easy, perhaps even removing, marking, or covering plantings or other items in the yard in order to open up the area, can really help the process.

Provide space for storage

Providing dry space to store materials that will be reused or donated can facilitate recycling. It might mean parking your car in the driveway for a couple weeks so materials can be stored in the garage, but it will be worth it.

Help separate materials

Like any recycling, the key is to keep everything clean, dry and properly separated. You can help keep packaging or other waste out of the shingles, wood, cabinets, appliances, etc., that will be recycled.

Speaking of packaging...

These materials are generally recyclable, but if you don’t help recycle them, they may end up in the dumpster, because your contractor, who may be working far from his or her home base, may not be as familiar with local recycling options for cardboard, plastic films, or other packaging materials as you are.
You can help by handling this portion of the jobsite recycling.

What to do with excess materials

You can often take suitable reusable materials to places that can remarket them, like

Habitat for Humanity ReStore,
Building Materials Exchange, or
other similar operations.

Generally, they want clean, functional appliances, and good reusable cabinets, sinks, doors and windows.
If you have a significant amount of extra unused material such as siding, sheathing or roofing, or even paint, electrical or plumbing supplies, you may be able to donate those as well. Call before bringing any materials.

Tokyo Home to Office

Working at home can be tricky at times -- especially when your workstation winds up being your dining room table or living room couch (ahem...), but Japanese designer Yuko Shibato has inspired us with this transforming Tokyo home office. By incorporating two movable walls in two different rooms, Shibato has created built-in storage space that also works to separate home and office life. Dubbed "Switch", the project can transform from an office to a home simply by sliding a wall.

Transforming multi-purpose furniture is a key design element for small space living, so clever tricks were employed to turn this tiny apartment into an efficient office. The largest room of the apartment was transformed into a large meeting room and library with a sliding wall. When a large meeting space is needed, the wall slides shut over the library (there’s a hole cut out for the table). When less people are there, the library can be opened. Then at night, the library is closed down and the large meeting table can be used as a dining room.

One of the bedrooms was turned into a work room with three stations and upper shelving. To provide additional work and reading space, this work room was connected to the larger bedroom across the hall with a large swinging bookshelf. When open, the bookshelf effectively cuts off the bedroom space and creates a reading room accessible from the work room through a square portal. At night when everyone has gone home, the swinging door is closed and the bedroom is more open.

Plastic Bottle School House in Asia

This cleverly constructed schoolhouse in San Pablo, Philippines, which happens to be the first of its kind in Asia. The innovative building was conceived and constructed by Illac Diaz and MyShelter Foundation as a way of turning a negative - an abundance of discarded plastic bottles - into a positive - a brand new place for children to get their learn on. The school is made from 1.5 and two-liter soda and water bottles filled with adobe, a combo that is relatively cheaper than concrete and - get this - is also about three times stronger!

Plastic bottles are every where, and until we can finally do away with them completely, why not turn them into livable, usable structures?
In order to raise awareness for the school, MyShelter Foundation organized a run in June. They also collected bottles – which most people were more than happy to get rid of – at the event. The Bottle School was constructed with the help of dozens of volunteers who secured the bottles with liquified adobe and steel bars. The site was donated by the local government of San Pablo.

“It’s very empowering because what used to be a problem is now a solution,” said Mr. Diaz about the inspiring project. Congratz to MyShelter Foundation for completing their very first Bottle School and stay tuned because word on the street is that there are many more schools like this one in the works.

The Modern Dollhouse

I will never forget as a little girl waking up on Christmas morning and finding a completely assembled dollhouse for me and my sisters to play with courtesy of Santa. It was a magical feeling that I think every little girl should have.

Thanks to Brinca Dada the "Emerson House" brings an entirely new realm to the dollhouse experience. No longer the Victorian or Colonial style dollhouse that I remember but a modern house built by an architect Santa somewhere.
