I think I would stick the shovel head in the ground so the birdhouse could be supported from below. Would be tricky to get it level though. Probably better on a city roof install like this.

Shovel Birdhouse
Check out this "Shovel Birdhouse" from Jan Habraken at Design Public. I like the design but not sure how practical it is for your backyard.
